Who Do You Want to Protect?

A Simple Retirement Question Every Federal and Postal Employee Should Answer

Retirement Planning Starts With People

When most people think about retirement planning, they think about numbers.

Their pension.

Their TSP.

Social Security.

Life insurance.

But here's the real scoop...

I like to start somewhere much simpler.

I start with people.

Who do you want to protect?

That one question changes the whole conversation.

Because retirement isn't just about your benefits. It's about making sure the people you love are taken care of, too.

Start With Your Family, Not Your Benefits

Before we ever talk about policies or paperwork, I like to learn about your life.

Who counts on you?

Who would be affected if your income changed?

Who do you want to care for, even after you retire?

Maybe you're married.

Maybe you're raising children.

Maybe you're helping an adult child.

Maybe you're caring for an aging parent.

Or maybe your family looks different than anyone else's.

Every family is unique.

That's why I don't believe in one-size-fits-all retirement planning.

The easy answer is this:

Your plan should fit your life—not someone else's.

If You Have a Spouse or Partner, Start There

For many federal and postal employees, a spouse is a big part of the retirement picture.

Here are a few questions I often ask:

  • Would your spouse know what income continues after retirement?

  • Have you talked about survivor benefit options?

  • Is your spouse covered under FEHB or PSHB if needed?

  • Have you reviewed your FEGLI coverage together?

  • Are your beneficiary designations up to date?

  • Do you both understand what your retirement income may look like?

These aren't trick questions.

They're conversation starters.

The more you understand together today, the fewer surprises you'll have later.

Your Children May Still Be Counting on You

One thing I've learned over the years is this:

Children don't always become financially independent the day they turn 18.

You may still be helping with:

  • College tuition

  • Housing

  • Transportation

  • Health expenses

  • Childcare for grandchildren

  • Support for an adult child

  • Ongoing care for a child with a disability

Every family's story is different.

That's why it's important to think not only about who depends on you today, but how long that support may continue.

Don't Forget About Caregiving

Many of the people I meet are caring for someone else.

Maybe it's a parent.

A spouse.

A sibling.

Or another loved one.

Caregiving often affects more than your schedule.

It can change your retirement timing.

Your monthly expenses.

Your travel plans.

Even where you decide to live.

These responsibilities deserve a place in your retirement plan because they're already a part of your life.

Once You Know Who You're Protecting, Review What You Have

After you've thought about the people who matter most, it's time to take a look at your benefits.

A simple review might include:

  • FEGLI life insurance

  • Personal life insurance

  • Beneficiary designations

  • Survivor benefit options

  • FEHB or PSHB health coverage

  • Your retirement income sources

  • Current household expenses

  • Important documents that may need updating

Notice something?

We're not starting with products.

We're starting with people.

That's what makes the difference.

Write Down Your Questions

You don't have to walk into a retirement meeting knowing every answer.

In fact, I'd rather you come with good questions.

You might ask:

  • Does my current coverage still fit my family's needs?

  • Are the right people listed as beneficiaries?

  • What should my spouse know before I retire?

  • Which family responsibilities might continue into retirement?

  • What documents should I gather?

  • Which benefits should I review first?

Good questions lead to good conversations.

And good conversations lead to better decisions.
