Life Insurance Before Retirement: Start With the Purpose, Not the Price

When people ask me about life insurance, one of the first questions I hear is:

“How much does it cost?”

And yes, cost matters.

But in my years helping federal employees, I’ve learned there’s a better question to ask first:

What do I need this life insurance to do?

That one question can make everything else much easier.

Life insurance should have a job

Life insurance is not just something you buy and forget about.

It should have a purpose.

Maybe you want it to help your spouse pay the bills if something happens to you.

Maybe you still have a mortgage.

Maybe you are helping children, grandchildren, or aging parents.

Maybe you want money available for final expenses or other family needs.

The easy answer is: Your life insurance should match your life.

And your life today may look very different from the day you first signed up for coverage.

Your needs may have changed

Think back to when you first enrolled in FEGLI or bought another life insurance policy.

Were your kids still young?

Did you just buy a house?

Was your family depending on your paycheck?

Was retirement still years away?

Now things may be different.

Your mortgage may be smaller.

Your children may be grown.

You may have more savings.

Your spouse may have retirement income of their own.

Or maybe you are now helping care for someone else in your family.

That does not mean you automatically need more or less life insurance.

It simply means it is time to ask:

Does my coverage still fit my life today?

Start with these simple questions

Before you compare policies or prices, ask yourself:

Who depends on me financially?

Think about your spouse, children, parents, grandchildren, or anyone else who depends on your help.

What bills would still need to be paid if my income stopped?

Think mortgage, rent, debt, utilities, medical costs, caregiving, and other regular expenses.

How long would those needs last?

Some needs may only last a few years. Others may last much longer.

What money would already be available?

You may already have savings, retirement income, survivor benefits, Social Security, or other resources.

What changes when I retire?

Your paycheck changes. Your benefits may change. Your expenses may change too.

That is why retirement is such a good time to review your life insurance.

Price makes more sense after purpose

Here’s the real scoop:

The cheapest policy is not always the best one.

And the most expensive policy is not always the best one either.

Different policies are built to do different jobs.

So instead of only asking:

“What is the cheapest option?”

Ask:

“Does this coverage do what I need it to do?”

That is a much better place to start.

Do not wait until retirement week

If retirement is one to seven years away, this is a great time to get organized.

You do not have to make any big decisions today.

Start small.

Gather your FEGLI information.

Find any other life insurance policies you own.

Check your beneficiaries.

Write down your questions.

Then ask yourself:

What do I need this coverage to do after I retire?

Small steps still count.

Let’s make this simple

You do not need to have all the answers before you start.

You just need clarity.

And you do not have to do this alone.
